There is a popular belief that going on a vacation has to cost a fortune but I’ll let you in on a little secret – it doesn’t.
One of my plans is to go on a vacation this year and if you want to travel, like me – or you’re just looking for a great way to spend time with friends or old squad without cleaning out your savings, then you need to plan and be strategic about it.
Here are some key points to keep in mind as you start your vacation planning:
Figure out your Travel Goal
If you are really serious about going on a vacation, the first most important thing is to make a plan. At this point, you have to start asking yourself questions.
Where do you want to go? When? Do you want to stay in a hotel or you have an alternative? Are there discounts for the flight? Is it a road trip? Are you going with people or by yourself? Is it affordable? Are there enough activities you can engage in? Will it make you happy?
Having a plan and figuring out the costs will help you have a better sense of what you need to do to stay on track. Once you have a rough idea of the type of trip you’re looking for, you can figure out how much you need to save.
Pick a Location Within your
– La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort, Lagos, Nigeria
Going on a vacation doesn’t have to be outside the country. Yes, its awesome to travel outside the country and experience their culture, if you can afford it. But if you really need to go on adventure and you’re on a tight budget, you can also look within. You can check out states and tourist centers you’ve never been to and experience the different cultures. You’d be amazed at how much fun is hidden undiscovered just under your nose.
-Whispering Palms, Badagry, Nigeria
Even within your country, you have to choose your destination wisely. Pick a place that has affordable activities, lodging and food so that you don’t end up spending a lot of money during your stay.
Automate Your Savings Strategy
Once you’ve figured out your plan, the next step is to start saving aggressively. You need to set up a special savings account for your vacation and be consistent with the savings. You can set up an online digital savings account(e.g Piggybank.ng)to achieve this. Every week or month, automate a small portion of your bank account to transfer to your travel savings account.
Automated savings can be life-changing. And if you use a saving app, it will help you achieve your goal faster because you can monitor it.
Consider The Best Mode Of Transportation
It’s also important you do research about transportation in the place you’ll be visiting. Let’s assume you’re going on a vacation within your country or in a close by country, a road trip could be more affordable and interesting. Don’t take a flight or rent a car just because you want to. Remember your budget and stick to low cost activities.
Use an uber/taxify or rent cars, when it’s really necessary. Take their shuttles or public transport to better explore.
Discounts, discounts, more discounts!
You can also try to take advantage of various travel discounts especially during festive seasons or even the off seasons. In order to keep up with them, you can subscribe to any number of websites that send travel deals (travelstart, wakanow etc).
Asides this, you can join various organizers of tourist trips (e.g. Social Prefect, Irin Ajo) that give discount to different countries or different tourist locations.
